Creator Studio

Studio Diaries - 7-21-23

Gary Henderson

In these "Studio Diaries" episodes, I'll be sharing my biggest lessons learned as a creator.

This week's diary is all about cancel culture and how to deal with your biggest critics. It's important that creators feel safe expressing themselves online without the fear of getting ridiculed by others. In this episode, I'll share my experiences with online bullies and haters and what to do if you fear getting canceled online.

Gary Henderson:

My name is Gary Henderson. And I built the creator studio to show you what's possible. Like yesterday was a wild day for me. It was July 19th, 2023. And I did my morning clubhouse mastermind. So every morning I go in clubhouse at 8:00 AM and I have this creator mastermind, and we talk about a bunch of different topics. We talked about pinky doll. We talked today about Barbie the movie, and they're a hundred million dollar budget. But yesterday. Yesterday, we talked about feeling safe. Yesterday, we talked about cancel culture. Yesterday, we talked about. Creators being able to create and express their opinions and, and create their art without. Necessarily being ridiculed. Now we're going to have some rooms to talk about haters and how to deal with that. But what happened to me yesterday was I got docs. I was bullied. Um, someone got kicked off the app for violating terms of service. And it all happened in all honesty. Because. Creators sometimes get a little jealous and envious of other creators. So we had this room running that was called w T F they shouldn't be on this app. When you create a room title on a social audio app. The first thing you need to do is you need to write a good title, you to write a title that evokes emotion, you need to write a title that, that causes someone to feel some kind of way. Well, evidently I call someone to feel some kind of way, and they thought my room was about them and it wasn't. So we were talking about cancel culture and I was talking about like Morgan Wallen, for example. Two years ago, Morgan Wallen was canceled for saying the N word. There was a radio station in San Diego. That completely put him on blast and canceled him that same radio station two years later. Um, happened to, you know, changed our name to wall and radio or something like that. Rename their radio station after him. When he came to town and sold out the show. So. While we think something's a big deal. And we, we rally all of our fans and all of our troops to cancel someone more times than not that cancellation doesn't last forever. And it just becomes content for the moment for me. I don't want to be involved in that content. I feel when I think that most of the time we should just make our own decisions. I trust you and I believe you, but I don't trust and believe what you think because it wasn't my experience. So if you tell me that the restaurant is the best restaurant in the world, and you're a vegan. I'm not. So I would go there and I might want to stay can, they may not have any stake in, I may see only vegan dishes and I may think it's horrible because my experiences are different than yours. So that's my. Topic of my room. That was what I tried to create around. And it was hijacked. And sometimes as a creator, you get hijacked. We had odd energy come in from another creator on the app and other large creator. They hijack the energy in our room. They disrespected. The people on my stage. We had to remove them from the room, literally kick them out of the room. They got such, such a Tisci that they went out and they started another room on clubhouse with my name and the title. Now, let me just stop for a second. I'm here to build a personal brand. Let me tell you my goal in all of my clients. Every one of my community they'll share with you. My goal is that, you know, my name. And let me tell you, I was the number one most talked about person on the app clubhouse yesterday. And I know it's a small app and I know it's not the biggest, but look I was talked about and everybody knew my name and that's my goal. So these guys came in, they got a little pissy. We kicked him out of our room. We continued our conversation. They went and put my name in the title, marketing for me, rent free in your head. They put my name at the title. Then they continued throughout the day to just run rooms and talk about me and talk about me. They were bullies. They docks my family. Uh, they attacked my Instagram and sent bots to my Instagram. Like horrible, horrible shit. But at the end of the day, they got clipped is what we call it. They got kicked off the app. And that's what should have happened. So when you're a creator and you create content and you create content with good intentions and it evokes emotion and people like it should. And someone has an emotional reaction like this person did. And they honestly, it was like a little kid in a, in a sandbox. Right. Having a Tisci fit, right. Having a temper tantrum. And in all honesty, now they're putting time out and that's where they deserve to be. So don't let your emotions get the best of you. Be sure that you're checking yourself, be sure that, you know, when people say things about you, if it's true or if it's false and if it's true own it, it is what it is. And if it's false, Then don't worry about it. You don't have to dismiss rumors. You don't have to prove your innocence. You don't have to prove that you're not something all you have to do is go be you authentically. You. Go be you without being scared of ridicule or the comments. Let those keyboard warriors or those honestly internet pitches, do whatever they want. Let them bitch let them moan, let them complain, take it to the platform. Right? Take it to the platform report that you're being harassed. Like I did. Report that you're being bullied like I did, and let the platform take care of it and kick them off that will set the, getting into arguing matches and back and forth. We'll get you some attention for a moment. Right. Standing up for yourself and getting someone removed from the platform for bullying and violating terms of service. We'll give you attention and respect for a really long time yesterday, I stood up. For every other creator on the app that this person had been bullying. I stood up for the independent creators that deserve to be able to create their own content. And we as a community grew stronger together. As a leader, as a creator. Sometimes you have to put yourself out there. Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in. Sometimes. You have to be the one that takes the heat. And that was me yesterday. I don't regret it. It was good. It was a learning experience. Early on in my creator journey. Grant Cardone told me. That I wasn't ready for the big stage yet, and I didn't believe him. And I was arrogant and I. No way grant I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm ready. And he said, you're not Gary. And I don't even know if grant remembers this conversation, but he said, you're not because you haven't experienced enough. And he said, you're going to, you're going to get haters. You're going to get all this stuff. And when it does, it's going to teach you the lessons that are going to prepare you for the next stage. And. Look, I've gone through bouts and, and, and these battles with haters before. And I've gotten emotional every time yesterday. I didn't. Yesterday. I stayed calm. And yesterday when all the hate was going on. I opened up a room on clubhouse, which you can go check out. It's in my replays that says if I'm a scammer, come confront me. I was the only one on stage. I brought up people one by one, anyone that raised their hands to bring them up and ask me questions or talk to me. To figure out if the rumors. If everything that they were saying was true and everyone that come to stage and asked. Right. They ask the questions. No one. Thought that what this other person was saying was true. At 2300 people come through the room. So you talk about being a content creator. You talk about. Growing on an app, you talk about building a live audience. That's what I did yesterday. So even though I had moments of hate. I had. Threats on my life. I have bots. I had threats on me as a creator. Even though all those things happen. I was slandered. My character was defamed. I was doxed, even though all of those things happened. That is part of being a creator. It is part of being authentic. And it's part of being you. So. Learn. Learn. I'm going to say one more time. Learn. To keep your emotions out of these things. When you get emotional. That's when everything goes sideways. When you can check your emotions. And I know that's tough whenever people are talking about your family and they're talking about. Your past, or they're calling you names that, you know, aren't true, like scammer. Right. When people are doing that. Right. I want you to. Learn. And you do this or practice. I want you to learn. To keep your emotions in check. I want you to learn. To keep calm and I want you to learn. To create authentically as you, without the fear of what anyone else is going to say. And the creator studio, our goal is to show you what's possible. My goal as a creator is to show you my journey and let you in behind the scenes, these diary episodes. They're going to be personal stories for me in my life. Sometimes stories that happened in the past and sometimes stories that are very relevant, like this. If you enjoy our show, please click the follow button. And give the show a follow.
